Why was my Pell Grant taken away?

On this year's FASFA, I had to fill out an independent student section because I turn 24 in December. I was awarded a Pell Grant, to the point that I had accepted it amongst other loans to pay for my last year. Now they've sent me a "correction" e-mail that takes away both my Pell Grant and my SOEG. My GPA meets the standards, everything meets Pell Grant standards. Because they forced me to file as an independent student, my EFC should be less then 4000.

If your efc is less than 4000, contact the school to find out why your Pell was removed. SOEG is for those with the greatest financial need (so you may not have qualified for this); however, the Pell is offered to a wider range of efc's. You are independent because the dependency question states "As of today were you born before January 1, 1987... from my calculations, you were born in December of 1986 - which means that you are independent. If they made changes to your fafsa, you should have been notified of a new efc - see if this is the reason that you've lost your need-based grants (your efc may be too high).

GPA actually DOES have something to do with getting the Pell Grant, if you grades aren't good enough it can and will be taken away.

Otherwise, you either did something wrong or have been found in violation of their minimum academic standards or you've used yours up (relative to the 150% rule)......... or something.

Without more information, nobody here can tell for sure. Check with your school's financial aid office.

If you are not 24 yet, then you are not an independent student and you have to use your parents information. GPA has nothing to do with getting the Pell grant.
