Do you have reason to suspect you might be? Have you talked with your financial aid office? have you filled out a FAFSA lately? The Student Aid Report (SAR) has a place for comments and will tell you of any problems.

You probably aren't in default of a grant, since those don't need to be paid back. You are in default of a loan if you have taken out a loan and haven't paid it back when you are supposed to have done so. Do you know if you have loans? Do you know if you've paid them back?

You can find out if you are in default on a government student loan or owe a repayment on a federal grant (you can't be in default on a grant) by logging into the federal database at http://www.nslds.ed.gov. You will need your federal PIN to access this site. If you don't know it you can have it sent to you, or you can apply for one, at http://www.pin.ed.gov. If you owe a repayment or are in default the website will tell you who you need to contact to rectify the situation. Note that you will not be eligible for any additional financial assistance until a default or repayment has been taken care of.

Go to fafsa on the web and check out your past grants. If you dont have any loans out then you should be ok because grants dont have to be paid back.
