Classes may have already started, so you'd miss out on getting the Syllabus and your teachers speech about what he expects for you to pass the class.

Believe me I should know. I have done so....I am still in the process! Of course you do miss out on classes...but your best bet is to email the teachers or department to get an override if the classes are full, at least at my university. Try to do so in the first week of classes if you MUST register late as that gives you more of a likely hood to get in the class...but all in all I'd recommend not to as it causes many problems...
