I am a 22 year old female and live in Indiana. I work full time and pay my own rent at an apartment, I am single, have no assets other than a car, have my own health insurance and my parents do not claim me as a dependent. My understanding is that if I am under 23 I will not be granted aid unless I fill out an override form stating my mothers marriage made it a difficult living arrangement for me, my real father is estranged, etc? All I want is aid to go to college and it seems impossible. Is there any possible way to prove I am not dependent without being married, or having a kid? I mean I am someone who tried to make the PROPER decisions in life here. It really seems they try to make it impossible for people to get their education who have strange situations on their hands like I did. My mom and my step dad who adopted me when I was 11 will not pay for my college and my mother was emotionally abusive towards me. That is why I moved out and wanted to do it all on my own. Please help!

The bad news is that if you have been working full time you may not qualify for a grant anyway, since you have no dependants. You will be able to get student loans and work you way through college just like a lot of us had to do.

You are not the only one with parents that can't/wont pay for college. Take the stafford loans, work during school, etc. It can be done don't wait for someone to hand it to you.

Unfortunatley, the only way for you to go here is with a dependancy override. I understand your frustration, but i was a Financial Aid Administrator for many years, and this is all you can do. Talk to your FA, and let him/her guide you through the process...Good Luck!
