I'm trying to get more than just my VA benefits for school because i also need money to pay for my 3 year old's daycare and other expenses. My husband is active duty military but we are REALLY struggling to get by with just his pay. We are in the southern california area, does anyone know if they were able to have both VA and a separate financial aid resource ? And what scholarships or grants could I get?

You can't receive GI Bill benefits with other student financial aid. As the GI bill will already cover for most, if not all of your tuition cost, plus books and a monthly housing allowance. You may be able to apply for other benefits if you are unemployed or are currently disabled, but as far as school is concerned, you may only receive the GI Bill and no other federal grants (the GI Bill is already considered federal student aid).

Scholarships, on the other hand, is academic based and not need-based, so you may apply for as many as you want and there are no limits on how much scholarship you can receive.

EDIT

Chapter 35 is a part of the GI Bill.

If you are eligible for a Pell Grant, you can receive it at the same time as receiving Chapter 35 VA benefits. You can also receive student loans, that you will have to pay back. However, you cannot receive more than your "cost of attendance", which is a formula that includes tuition, housing, travel and personal expenses. You will also need to check with your school regarding their stipend policies, some schools will hold the money as non-Title IV funds until all of your tuition is paid.
